Health Whisperers, The Self-Help Resource Centre, www.selfhelp.on.ca
<http://www.selfhelp.on.ca/>

Health Whisperers are a group of volunteer lay health promoters who have
conducted informal research over the summer of 2007 in a variety of
neighborhoods in Toronto. They wanted to know what newcomer women understand
about breast health and about the breast cancer resources that are available
in Ontario. The working assumption was that women would have less accurate
information about breast health because of the lack of a formal health care
system in their countries of origin and because they are still unfamiliar
with (and may have barriers in accessing) the Ontario health care system.

The Health Whisperers story gathering was informed by a broader
understanding of the social determinants of health, community development
and peer-based education. On Thursday, November 22nd, they will speak to
their experiences of group-based health promotion in a number of
hard-to-reach communities. Anyone who is interested in using peer-support
models or lay health promoters to do group based health promotion in
hard-to-reach and marginalized communities is invited to hear their stories
and share their own experiences.

Please join us on Thursday, November 22, 2007, from 2-4 pm for snacks and
networking as our Health Whisperers share their stories. RSVP to Rick Henry
at 416 487-4355. Suite 200, 40 Orchard View Blvd. (one block north of Yonge
and Eglinton).
