CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
FOR THE 
COMMUNITY BASED RESEARCH AWARD OF MERIT

The Centre for Urban Health Initiatives and the Wellesley Institute are
pleased to announce a call for nominations for a Community Based Research
(CBR) Award of Merit. The award will recognize Principal Investigators who
have demonstrated exemplary participation in the field of community based
research, as defined by the W.K. Kellogg Community Health Scholars Program
(2001).

		CBR is a collaborative approach to research that equitably
involves all partners in the research process and recognizes the unique
strengths that each brings. CBR begins with a research topic of importance
to the community with the aim of combining knowledge and action for social
change to improve community health and eliminate health disparities.  

The Objectives of this award are to:

*	   Acknowledge excellence in CBR practice
*	Address the community's need for greater interest and participation
in community research agendas
*	Increase acceptance of CBR as a legitimate research practice
*	Advance the cause of CBR, i.e. research that leads to evidence based
action and policy change 
*	Motivate academics and community practitioners to pursue CBR 
*	Assist recipients in their pursuit of promotion and recognition in
their field



Nominations are invited from community, policy, or academic project partners
who are working (or who have worked) with the nominee on a recent CBR
project.  The submission deadline is April 21, 2008.  Further details are
given below.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The award is open to Principal Investigators of CBR projects based in the
Greater Toronto Area who meet any of the following eligibility requirements:


*	Completed formal training in research (usually a PhD, MD, or
Master's level with research training) 
*	Holds an academic or research appointment at a teaching or research
institution or host community organization
*	Engaged in CBR research that exemplifies the principles of CBR as
defined above. 

**Note:  Nominations that include past award recipients are not eligible for
the award



NOMINATION PROCESS

o	Complete and submit a nomination form plus letter of recommendation
from a community or academic partner on the CBR project, outlining why the
nominee is an excellent candidate for the award.  
o	Deadline: 5:00pm, April 21, 2008 .
o	Please submit nominations by e-mail or fax to the Centre Coordinator

The successful Principal Investigator will be notified no later than May 15,
2008.  The award ceremony will take place at a Ten Year Anniversary Event of
the Wellesley Institute in June 2008 in Toronto.  

AWARD DETAILS

The award will be presented to an individual Principal Investigator but will
honour the entire project team. 

The successful Principal Investigator's project team will receive:

*	 Invitations to the award ceremony
*	 Award Certificates: Each member will receive a personalized award
certificate.
*	A copy of, "Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for
Health", edited by Barbara A. Israel, Eugenia Eng, Amy J. Schulz, and Edith
A. Parker. 
*	 Registration fees for one project team member to attend a local or
national conference of his/her choice
*	Organizational membership to Community Campus Partnerships for
Health (CCPH).
*	Project dissemination facilitated by the Centre for Urban Health
Initiatives 
*	An invitation to present the project at the Centre for Urban Health
Initiatives' monthly seminar series, Spotlight on Urban Health Research

Runners Up will receive:

*	Invitations to the award ceremony
*	Certificates of Recognition: Each project member will receive a
personalized certificate in recognition of their contributions to CBR
*	An invitation to display a project poster at the award ceremony
(created with support and funding from CUHI)


EVALUATION CRITERIA

The review committee will consider whether:

-	The research responds to a community identified issue or need
-	The community has been involved in the majority of stages of the
research (generation of research question, development of methodology, data
collection, analysis, interpretation of results, and dissemination of
results)
-	There has been ongoing community participation in decision making
-	The project has enabled community partnership
-	The project has contributed to meaningful social change and improved
community health

Nominations will be judged on the following criteria: "excellence innovation
and importance/relevance"
*	Excellence = quality of research; can include quality of partnership
*	Innovation = can include partnering, methodologies, research
questions, etc.
*	Importance/ Relevance = contribution to knowledge that has
significant effect on improving community health and eliminating health
disparities
