They show the study as it was in 1903 (and is now) with a single chimney
flu, but when Twain was writing his great works there it had a split flu, a
feature he admired, at least initially.

They left out MOBY DICK. You can visit Melville's home, Arrowhead, and stand
in that room by his hearth and look out the window at Mount Greylock in the
distance, just as he did.

They also left out Rowan Oak, where you can stand in the room where Faulkner
wrote some of his works and where his hand-written "story-boarded" plot
outlines for A FABLE are still intact on each wall of that room.

And equally interesting omissions for Emily D, Nathaniel H, and Ralph Waldo
E (with the added bonus of Henry T's room under the stairs).

We often talk about literature as if it were some kind of magic thing=97lik=
e it could be conjured without effort, if only we could arrange ourselves i=
n a certain fashion, eat the right breakfast, perform our ablutions just so=
, organize our desks like our favorite writers, copy their daily rituals.
