Can anyone identify the origins of the term "social determinants of
health"? Was it 1998 with the WHO-EURO document? Can anyone recall
seeing it, using it, earlier? Thanks, dennis

Alison Stirling then replied:
Not sure about the origins of the "social determinants of health". I
first came across the phrase "determinants of health" in the 'Nurturing
Health' report published by the now defunct (Ontario) Premier's Council
on Health, Well-being and Social Justice in 1991.

I thought Alison might have been lazy (kidding of course ;-) and I was
sure determinants of health came up earlier as a concept. A thousand
apologies Alison ... I will never doubt you again! Although The Ottawa
Charter for Health Promotion (1986) talks about “Prerequisites for
Health” as: peace, shelter, education, income, yada yada... à la W.H.O.
Alma Ata declaration (1978?), it does not state specifically “social
determinants of health” Dennis. Although going back to past policy think
pieces, including Achieving Health For All (Epp, 1988) and even
Lalonde’s New Perspectives (1974), it is clear that while not worded
specifically as SDOH, the concept nonetheless is there. As my dog-eared
version of New Perspectives states:

Now if you are going to read the following quote, imagine text floating
through space like at the start of Star Wars.

“ The health care system, however, is only one of many ways of
maintaining and improving health. ...[snip]... At the same time as
improvements have been made in health care, in the general standard of
living, in public health protection and in medical science, ominous
counter-forces have been at work to undo progress in raising the health
status of Canadians...”

And this was 1974 folks! What's that famous saying? “The more things
change....”

Anyhow, it was kinda fun to look through my old stuff ... so the
challenge is launched ... anyone else know of the term DOH (with or
without the word “social” in front of it ... and God ...if there is one
... please forgive me if I just opened yet another can of worms here!)
appearing earlier than the 1981 document from the Ontario Premier’s
Council on health, environment, peace on earth and whatever else it
tried to bite off?
