Minding Our Bodies: Physical Activity & Mental Health
Presenters: Jessica Kwick, Kim Umbach, Susan Roach and Judy Koss

Dates:

Monday, April 18, 2011

10:00 AM - 12: 00 PM EST

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

10:00 AM - 12: 00 PM EST

Workshop Description:

What is the connection between mental health and physical activity? What
partnerships are helpful to improve access to physical activity for people
with mental illness? What role do peer leaders play in programs for people
with serious mental illness?

These questions were asked and answered through the Minding Our Bodies
project. Minding Our Bodies is a capacity-building project that connects a
network of physical activity programs made accessible to people with mental
illness. During three years of this project, the particular benefits and the
barriers for physical activity have been demonstrated through pilot programs
across the province.

In this webinar, Jessica Kwik from the Canadian Mental Health Association,
Ontario will provide an overview of the project to date. She will introduce
representatives from various types of physical activity programs that are
based in the community mental health sector. Staff leaders and peer leaders
with lived experience of mental health issues will discuss the benefits from
programs at CMHA branches in Cochrane-Timiskaming and Thunder Bay. Both
organizations noted a significant shift in organizational culture among the
many documented program successes. Haldimand-Norfolk Resource Centre and
Mood Disorders Association of Ontario will also present their program
models, which have successfully increased levels of social inclusion along
with physical and mental health awareness.

What is Physical Literacy?

Presenter: Colin Walker

Dates:

Thursday, May 19, 2011

10:00 AM - 12: 00 PM EST

Tuesday, May 24, 2011
10:00 AM - 12: 00 PM EST

Workshop Description:

Just as kids need to develop their reading and writing literacy, and
numeracy, they also need to develop their physical literacy. Physical
literacy means developing proficiency in agility, balance, coordination and
speed; being able to move comfortably in different environments such as on
the ground or in the water; and mastering specific skills such as throwing
and catching a ball, riding a bike and skating.

This session will look at the what, when, how and the why of physical
literacy. We will also explore the importance of incorporating physical
literacy in all programs that involve physical activity at the 0-12 years of
age.
