The School of Public Health at the University of Alberta is pleased to
announce a new issue of Healthe-news.

In this issue:

Sustainability - the new public health challenge - "An ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure." "Better safe than sorry." These
are proverbs that unify and define the public health movement. Think
what our life expectancy might be in the absence of chlorination that
rids drinking water of cholera and other bugs that can harm us. Public
health has made great strides in recent decades, but the world is
changing. We are losing ground and now face a new public health
challenge.

Early bad behaviour predicts troubled path, according to study - Ian
Colman, an epidemiologist in the School of Public Health, has determined
that people who exhibited bad behaviour in their early teenage years
were far more likely than their well-behaved classmates to leave school
early and experience problems as adults such mental illness, family
conflict and financial troubles.

Driven to kill - a look at vehicular violence - Most people think of
guns and knives when talking about weapons, but cars are being used in a
number of violent acts says University of Alberta researcher Peter
Rothe.

Students go global, facilitate knowledge exchange - What makes community
health promotion programs effective in diverse global settings? What
lessons can be learned from various projects aimed at chronic disease
prevention or delivery of HIV/AIDs treatment? Gaining the answers to
these questions was the focus of a recent cross-continent dialogue
facilitated by public health students.
