Although the Guatemalan government has made significant budget
contributions to procure health commodities, the health supply chain is
still challenged to ensure essential medicines are available for all
segments of the population. To better understand the strengths and
weaknesses of Guatemala's public health supply chain, the USAID | DELIVER
PROJECT conducted a supply chain costing study in collaboration with the
Ministries of Health and Finance of Guatemala.

The study examined supply chain costs for contraceptives, vaccines,
micronutrients, and essential medicines. The project has published a
report, brief, and poster describing the details of the study and its

El Ministerio de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social y el Ministerio de
Finanzas en Guatemala se han comprometido a aumentar la visibilidad de la
cadena de suministros como un pilar estratégico para el logro de los
objetivos de salud pública. Por esta razón, ambos ministerios lideraron un
ejercicio de costeo  que ha servido para documentar los costos de
actividades como adquisición, almacenamiento, distribución y gestión; y al
hacer esto, están buscando alternativas para mejorar la rentabilidad y
desempeño del sistema logístico. También les ha servido para ganar
visibilidad de los costos logísticos en los presupuestos y planes anuales.
