Somewhere along the line I think this approach may lose the plot where it is
based on cartoons using hero/ demon characters. Public education focused on
behavioural change is always welcome, but these tactics have grossly failed
in the past. Indeed fear tactics especially have not worked to deter
increasing numbers of "users". Cute though these characters may be, they do
not alert young children, especially, to any sort of understanding about the
social determinants of health. Helping children to cope with stressful
family life, boredom, active and participative recreation and building
strong friendships will in my view go a long way to discouraging the use of
drugs and tobacco.
