Position Summary:
The incumbent will coordinate a research grant to conduct an in-depth
examination of homeless youths' food access as a fundamental
determinant of health, applying quantitative and qualitative methods
to gain an understanding of youths' everyday experiences and locate
these experiences within the context of local programs, policies, and
practices. The specific research objectives are to assess the extent
and nature of nutritional vulnerability (in terms of dietary
adequacy, food insecurity/deprivation, and anthropometric indices of
nutritional status) among a sample of homeless youth in Toronto;
contrast these findings to indicators of nutritional health among
youth in the general population; characterize the interrelationships
between community program and policy responses and youth's ability to
meet their basic needs for food; and elucidate the process of social
inclusion or exclusion as it occurs through local-level policies and
programs that affect homeless youths' food access and food
acquisition strategies. Under general direction, the study
coordinator supervises and directs staff engaged in participant
recruitment, data collection and data entry for a study of food
access, nutritional vulnerability and social exclusion among homeless
youth in Toronto, assuming overall responsiblity for the coordination
of this research project as well as responsibility for the
preliminary analysis and interpretation of quantitative and
qualitative data collected.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Master's degree in nutrition, social science and health, social work,
or related field, or equivalent combination of education and
experience.
Experience:
1-2 years (minimum): qualitative research experience and basic
familiarity with survey methods; project coordination and
administration (including maintenance of a budget); training and
supervision of staff; data management. Nutrition research experience
an asset.
Skills:
Good computer skills. Familiarity with SAS and Ethnograph software an
asset.
Other:
Demonstrated ability to work with homeless youth; understanding of
the research process; excellent organizational and interpersonal
skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; meticulous
attention to detail in handling schedules, data, and budgets.
Demonstrated initiative. Good judgment. Ability to set priorities and
work to deadlines.
