What? The 6th Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities
Where? University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, PEI
When? August 17– 20, 2010
Why? To learn about community resiliency and how it is linked to health,
safety and crime
Who? Those who work in education, social development, justice, crime,
disease and injury prevention, and health promotion
Have the time? Come for 4 days of learning, sharing knowledge, networking,
gaining resources and new skills.
Can’t take 4 days but are still interested? Then come to our pre-Institute
day on Tuesday, August 17th!
Program Highlights:
Keynote speaker: Bill Ninacs of speaking on “The Competent Community:
Resilient and Empowered”
Plenary speakers:
Marie Burge of the Cooper Institute, PEI, “Resilient Communities: The Art of
Bouncing Back and Bouncing Forward”
Caralee McDaniel of the Dartmouth Family Centre, Nova Scotia, “Community and
Personal Resiliency: Demonstrating the Success of the Community Action
Program for Children through First Voice”
Curriculum Workshops – Choose one stream and participate in all workshops to
receive a certificate of participation!
Foundation – Learn about the Circle of Health and the Medicine Wheel,
concepts and theories!
Application – A case study approach is used to explore the theme of building
resilient communities. Participants will work in groups to develop skills
and knowledge they can use when they return to their own communities.
Specialization – Participants will enhance their knowledge of how to achieve
better community resilence.
Building Resilient Communities into the 21st Century: A Collective Think
Tank – Interactive, lively and bilingual! A town hall session brings in
experts from francophone, Aboriginal and anglophone communities.
Children’s Program – Free, educational and fun! This program is offered to
children of registered participants during the Institute.

éducationnel et amusant sera offert gratuitement aux enfants des
participants inscrits.
