The inaugural (1993-94) Modern Language Association Prize for a
Distinguished Scholarly Edition has been awarded to -Roughing It-
(University of California Press, 1993), edited by Harriet Elinor
Smith, Edgar Marquess Branch, Lin Salamo, and Robert Pack Browning
(Smith, Salamo, and Browning are editors with the Mark Twain Project
in The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley). The relatively inexpensive
Mark Twain Library Edition of this book will be available in spring
1996; it will include the text, illustrations, explanatory notes, and
collateral documents, and will be ideal for students and general
     readers.
