Purpose:
Using independent judgment, promotes health education to the York community, and acts as liaison with other departments or organizations, on and off campus. Will provide educational programs, displays, events, etc. on relevant health related issues.

Responsibilities:
BASIC FUNCTIONS: PROGRAMMING +ACY- SPECIAL EVENTS: To coordinate and deliver educational programs and events pertaining to health related matters to the York community+ADs- making special arrangements (en masse testing or vaccination programs) as needed during public health problems (i.e. large influenza outbreak in residences, tracking students who may have been exposed to an infectious disease such as meningitis, tuberculosis, hepatitis, etc.) ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Hiring, training and supervising Peer Health Educators in their day-to-day activities+ADs- administration of the Office+IBk-s budget+ADs- maintenance of health resource library+ADs- participate in university-wide committees pertaining to health-related matters COUNSELLING +ACY- REFERRAL: to provide counselling and referrals to members of the York community for health related matters

MAJOR DUTIES: PROGRAMMING +ACY- SPECIAL EVENTS: Coordinates and/or delivers health education programs on such topics as HIV/AIDS, sex and sexuality, STDs/STIs, contraception, stress management, nutrition and eating disorders, date/acquaintance rape, smoking cessation, healthy lifestyles etc. Researches and keeps abreast with new trends in alcohol and substance abuse prevention programs with a view to developing and delivering awareness programs on campus. Organizes and implements health education projects in collaboration with a variety of student groups and departments at York, as well as off campus agencies. These will include seminars, events and activities for Dons+IBk- Training, the annual Health Fair, Orientation, and various health-related +IBw-awareness weeks+IB0-. Coordinates annual and as-needed special health efforts (e.g. meningitis vaccine clinic for students). Works collaboratively with residence life staff to determine health education programming for residenc!
 e students. Promotes the services of the Office of Health Education and Promotion and disseminates pertinent health information via poster campaigns, tabling and other public outreach initiatives. Coordinates and organizes fundraising and promotional efforts for various external health organizations including but not limited to blood donor clinics for Canadian Blood Services, fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society and fundraising for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research.

ADMINISTRATIVE: Promotes and manages the Peer Education program which includes the hiring, training and supervising of work-study students and volunteers. Administration and monitoring of the Health Education and Promotion budget including the payment of Peer Educators. Responsible for supplying and refreshing first aid kits for residence staff. Provides condoms to residence staff and students and maintains the supply of condoms at the University. Member of University-wide working groups and committees that address immediate on-campus health concerns and crises. (e.g. SARS, West Nile Virus, etc.) Prepares health and office related content for publications, the website and campus media (e.g. Excalibur). Acquires and maintains a collection of books, videos and other health-related information. Prepares an annual report to the Director of Student Affairs for the Office of Health Education and Promotion

COUNSELLING +ACY- REFERRAL Provides general counselling, information and referrals to York community members for issues of a health-related matter. Maintains and updates contacts both within the University and within the community at large to facilitate appropriate referrals for students. Visits clinics and resource centres within the GTA to ensure suitability for referrals. Provides on-going support and information to other front-line employees at the University including Dons and RLC+IBk-s seeking information or referrals with regard to health-related matters.

Education:
University degree or equivalent. Additional training related to health and wellness issues is required.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of experience in community health education preferably in a post-secondary environment. Basic counselling, work-shop design and teaching skills as well as an ability to synthesize health-related material in order to make it accessible to the student body at large. Experience managing volunteers and peer educators.

Skills:
Ability to research and provide high quality service to students in a confidential, supportive environment, provide advice and referals to members of the York community. Excellent organizational, time management, presentation and public speaking skills required. Ability to plan and creatively allocate resources. Excellent writing and proofreading skills. Good computer skills with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and desktop publishing software. Familiarity with e-mail, use of the internet and knowledge of audio-visual equipment an asset.

Decision Making:
In consultation with the Director of Student Affairs, the incumbent exercises considerable discretion in deciding what health issues are relevant to the York community for Peer Educator training, workshops, displays and special events. Sound judgment when selecting students for the Peer Educator program, when counselling students regarding their health and sexuality and when making referrals is a must.

Direction Received:
Works independently most of the time. Occasional direction from the Director of Student Affairs. In some situations may need to consult someone with expertise in a particular area.
