If it's of interest, Huck falls in love with a Mexican girl about his own age, 15 or so--whip-smart and from a good family--in my sequel Huckleberry Finn In Love and War: The Lost Journals. His attitudes there are based on his attraction to strong and classy young ladies like Miss Charlotte (Grangerford) and Mary Jane Wilks in the original Huck. Beyond that it seemed best to apply what has been said about Twain's own proclivities.
Becky Thatcher is in that league, too, of course, but turns out (spoiler-alert) to be Huck's half-sister.

Subject: Huck & "Romance"?

Hello Twain ListServ:

Is anyone aware of significant research done on the subject of Huckleberry
Finn=E2=80=99s character in regard his relationship to girls, romance, marr=
iage,
etc? I=E2=80=99m looking at any of the =E2=80=9CHuck stories=E2=80=9D (*Tom=
 Sawyer*, *Huckleberry
Finn*, *Tom Sawyer Abroad*, *Tom Sawyer Detective,* or *Huck and Tom Among
the Indians*).

Or tangentially, any research related to interpretations of Becky Thatcher.

I=E2=80=99m also interested in instances of Becky appearing in the
literary/cultural works of others (for instance, she is mentioned in Bob
Dylan=E2=80=99s autobiography *Chronicles Vol. 1*, Vachel Lindsey=E2=80=99s=
 =E2=80=9CKalamzoo,=E2=80=9D and
Will Vinton=E2=80=99s 1985 film *The Adventures Of Mark Twain*).
