This week in the BMJ

Volume 324, Number 7333, Issue of 9 February, 2002

© BMJ 2002 Available online at: http://bmj.com/content/vol324/issue7333/ <http://bmj.com/content/vol324/issue7333/>         Inequality and poverty cause war:         "....... The roots of war lie in poverty: political, economic, and social inequalities whereby individuals or groups are motivated         to fight to seek redress. War also often has a cultural dimension related to ethnicity or religion. Stewart (p 342) says that         although all these factors predispose to conflict, a history of conflict is always a constant factor. ..."         - Data on war deaths are needed         - Children pay the price in Afghanistan         - Post-combat syndromes are not unique to the Gulf war         - Can war be just?         - Asylum seekers who alter their stories may not be lying         - Early diagnosis is key in bioattacks         - Cough medicines are unnecessary         - Post-traumatic stress disorder is common after conflict         - Nuclear terrorism is a real threat We welcome posting on social justice & public health that provide: a) information (e.g. about conferences or job announcements or publications relevant to social justice & public health), and b) substantive queries or comments directly addressing issues relevant to social justice and public health.
