*** Bonjour,
At the risk of looking a bit gross here, I would
say that the most utilized term for focus group
in french in quebec is ... focus group. As usual,
there is the difference between the general term
and the technical term. Generally speaking, focus
group is utilized as almost any kind of little
group meeting working systematically on a
specific issue. More technically, focus groups
have come out of the small group social
psychological tradition, larged reutilized in
commercial marketing strategies to hash out
specific characteristic of target groups or
products. The nominal group is one of many
specific ways to manage one of these groups, and
the nominal group technique (groupe nominal in
french) is one that goes through many rouds of
confidentila voting to prioritize in trying to
neutralize the big voices after a period of
exchange; nominal groups are often conducted in a
non face-to-face seting, which is not the case
for focus groups. So depending on what type of
meeting or technique the original asker is
talking about, in a specialized or general
context, the translation could vary. It would
usually not be groupe nominal for reasons
mentioned above, and groupe de discussion ou
entretien semi-dirigé de groupe, as mentioned by
two of the previous contributors would probably
be the most generally usable terms.
