On April 29, 2014, Dr. Jessica Dere, Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto Scarborough and SAMI Alumni will present "A cross-cultural study of depressive symptoms: Measurement invariance of the BDI-II among Chinese- and European-heritage students". A significant literature exists regarding variations in depressive symptom reporting between samples of Chinese and 'Western' cultural heritage. This webinar will provide an overview of the existing literature, and then discuss a recent study that examined the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) among a large sample of Chinese-heritage and European-heritage undergraduate students. Implications for the literature on culture and depression will be discussed, along with lessons for cross-cultural psychopathology research more broadly. On May 13, 2014, Dr. Rachelle Ashcroft, Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work Renison University College at the University of Waterloo will present "An Exploratory study of the Incentives and Disincentives Influencing Quality of Care for Depression and Anxiety in Family Health Teams". Incentives encourage treatment of depression and anxiety; whereas, disincentives deter the treatment of depression and anxiety. This webinar will present findings of a qualitative study conducted to examine the barriers and facilitators to the treatment of depression and anxiety in Family Health Teams using a framework of incentives and disincentives. On May 27, 2014, Ms. Nancy Clark, Community Mental Health Nurse and IMPART Fellow, will present "Examining Community capacity to Support Karen Refugee Women's Mental Health and Well-Being in the Context of Resettlement in Canada". The process of migration and context of resettlement are important determinants for the mental health and well-being of refugee women. In the years 2005-2009 Karen women and families represented the largest government assisted refugee groups destined to a South Western region in British Columbia. Informed by postcolonial feminist perspectives this study examined intersecting factors of gender, resettlement and mental health and dominant cultural practices and policies that shaped Karen women's resettlement. On June 3, 2014, Dr. Jaemin Kim, SAMI Alumni and Project Coordinator at the Institute for Work & Health will present "The mental health of Korean transnational mothers". A recent migration trend from Korea is the transnational family arrangement where mothers migrate with children to English speaking countries while fathers stay in the home country. Mothers in those families may experience more challenges than other family members because they have to adjust to a new country, new parenting role, and family separation. But little is known about their mental health. This webinar will present a scoping review of the evidences in the literature on impact of transnational family arrangement and migration on the mental health of Korean transnational mothers. On June 10, 2014, Dr. Veronic Clair, family physician, addiction consultant in Vancouver, B.C. and IMPART Clinician Scholar will present "Public health, primary care, and intersectoral management of health determinants - a realist Inquiry and the Computer-based Drug and Alcohol Training Assessment in Kenya (eDATA K) pilot project implications." This webinar will present the findings of a systematic review and a case study inspired by realist methods, looking at the contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes of intersectoral action (ISA) to manage health determinants when public health, primary care and other sectors are involved. Barriers to participation in ISA in relation to community mental health and addiction services include stigma, lack of awareness and need to develop the skills of primary care, public health and other sectors to deliver intervention. The Grand Challenges Canada eDATA K pilot's results show improvement in knowledge attitude and skills in relation to effective intervention for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use disorder and co-morbidities or complications.
