I heartily concur, Wolfgang. To bring it back to Twain, but also as a
response to the points Wolfgang and Hal have made, I strongly
recommend Twain's "White House Funeral" letter, which I believe
Greeley refused to publish, but which is a deepling entertaining
insight into Twain's year as a Washington correspondent (fleshed out
wonderfully by John Muller elsewhere). It also contains queasy
resonances with the contemporary. Here's a link:
