Only a dozen or so pages of the Hawaiian novel survive; they're at Berkeley
and are singularly uninteresting. More interesting, however, is an argument
made by Kate Winter (SUNY Albany, I think) at MLA 18 months ago, that
>Connecticut Yankee< developed from the Hawaiian novel. The presence of
volcanos and naked children and some other environmental feature of
>Yankee<,
along with the nearly complete disappearance of the Hawaiian manuscript,
makes
this hypothesis intriguing. The timing is right too. Anyone have further
thoughts on Winter's idea?
