Dennis Welland's very careful essay on the differences between the two versions of the text was published in 'Mark Twain's Last Travel Book,' Bulletin of the New York Public Library, 69:1 (January 1965) pp. 31-48. I think I am right in saying that there is no evidence that Twain was aware that there were two different versions of the text. If I remember rightly, there's more on the British colonial material (South Africa especially) in the Chatto version. That is, though, a big if! Best.
