PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT OF BEHAVIOURS IN PERSONS WITH DEMENTIA


AN ONLINE WORKSHOP FOR HEALTHCARE & OTHER PROFESSIONALS


THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE GOING AHEAD, YOU CAN STILL REGISTER


When: Mon Jan 11th to Sun Feb 7th, 2016 (4 weeks)
ONLINE weekly at your discretion
Cost:  $240 (Seniors/Students $120)


Course Objectives:

  *   To gain familiarity with dementia, common illnesses causing the symptoms, delirium, depression and distinguishing the similarities and differences between the illnesses
  *   To understand common Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) and the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment
  *   To be able to understand screening and assessment tools used to identify causes for behavior
  *   To introduce the role of Mental Health legislation and community support in the management of BPSD

Week 1:  Introduction to the Three D’s (Dementia, Delirium, Depression) and types of Dementia

  *   What are the some of the various types of dementia
  *   Case examples from practice
  *   How to distinguish between Dementia, Delirium and Depression which are often mistaken for each other

Week 2:  Understanding Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD)

  *   What are Behaviours and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD)
  *   Examples of common forms of BPSD
  *   What are common treatment/assessment frameworks used to identify causes to behavior
  *   Helpful tips to consider when working with individuals who have BPSD

Week 3:  Screening and assessment tools for Persons with Responsive Behaviors

  *   What are various screening and assessment tools utilized by professionals for persons with dementia
  *   The five main categories for these assessments (Delirium, Pain, Cognition, Mood, Behavioral observation)
  *   A description of each tool and instructions on administering them

Week 4:   Community Support and Mental Health Legislation in Ontario

  *   What is Ontario Mental Health Legislation and what is the role of legislation in the management of BPSD
  *   What is a Form 1, Form 2, and Police apprehension
  *   An overview of available resources for seniors with BPSD and their care providers in the City of Toronto
  *   What are resources available across the Province of Ontario to support seniors with BPSD and their caregivers

Instructors:
Leslie Giddens-Zuker, BSW, MSW, RSW Leslie is a Geriatric Mental Health Clinician at University Health Network and has been at Toronto Western Hospital for 18 years.
Mario Tsokas, BSW, RSW Mario is a Psychogeriatric Resource Consultant and has been with the University Health Network Toronto Rehab and the Regional Geriatric Program of Toronto for the last 7 years.
