Postdoctoral Fellowship, Social Determinants of Health, Department of Sociology, University of British Columbia
Saturday, 31 March 2007
Vancouver, British Columbia
Deadline March 31, 2007
The University of British Columbia Department of Sociology invites
applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Social Determinants
of Health, effective July 1, 2007 (or as agreed). UBC, a world leader
in health research and arguably the birthplace of the population health
movement, has strong programs in health sociology, epidemiology, health
promotion, health services and policy research, health psychology and
health economics. The Department of Sociology has created a specialty
in the social determinants of health field, with a special focus on
applying theoretically sophisticated and methodologically diverse
approaches to researching and understanding health inequalities.
The fellowship is for two years (potentially renewable), with a salary
of $55,000 per year. A Ph.D. and evidence of research experience in the
social determinants of health field are required. Applicants should
normally be within three years of being awarded the Ph.D. at the time
of taking up the position (in the summer or early fall of 2007).
The
successful candidate will be expected to further develop her/his own
research agenda while also collaborating with faculty members in the
Department who conduct determinants of health research. Opportunities
for interaction and collaboration with interdisciplinary health
researchers in the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology, Centre
for Health Services and Policy Research, Human Early Learning
Partnership, Institute of Health Promotion Research, and Department of
Psychology are also possible.
Funding for this position comes via a
Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research ‘Senior Scholar' career
investigator award won by Dr. Gerry Veenstra, who will serve as faculty
supervisor for the postdoctoral fellow. The successful candidate may
contribute to teaching in the Department, if so interested, in one of
the following areas: social determinants of health, social statistics
or research methods. The University of British Columbia hires on the
basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. All qualified
candidates are encouraged to apply.
Inquiries and applications, including three letters of reference (sent
under separate cover), curriculum vitae, a sample of written work, a
short statement describing fit with the Department, and a summary of
current and future research interests should be sent to
Dr. Neil Guppy
Head, Department of Sociology, The University of British Columbia
6303 N.W. Marine Drive
Vancouver, B.C. V6T 1Z1
Submissions received by March 31, 2007 will be given priority, although the position will remain open until filled.
