Hi Lynn,

There is a huge interdisciplinary literature on this that dates back to the earlier decades of the 20th century and predates most of the resurgence of "social epidemiology" (broadly defined) in the past 2 decades--lots of stuff done by psychologists (e.g., Bruce Dohrenwend) incidentally as well sociologists and anthropologists.

A nice concise book covering many facets of it (from the past into the current era) is an edited volume by Allan Horwitz and Teresa Scheid (I loaned it to a student, so the actual title escapes me--I think it is called "The Handbook of the Sociology of Mental Health").  As the title implies, it is written mostly by sociologists, but the areas covered are things that have been investigated by a range of disciplines--from psych to epidemiology and beyond--stuff like SES/race/gender disparities, stress and coping, stigma, social networks, social and life course positions (marriage, youth), treatment services, criminal justice issues, as well as issues like US efforts at measuring prevalence.
