I can relate to the story told by Angela of Tooker's death and its
prescription drug lead-up.
I was prescribed Vivol (Valium) when I was 14 years old and each family
doctor thereafter renewed the prescription. Of course, my depression never
lifted and only worsened. At the age of 30, I asked my GP how much longer I
would have to be on Vivol. He replied: The rest of your life.
After that visit, I went home and did what you're not supposed to do. I
immediately stopped taking the drug. Since I hadn't been on a very high
dose, I survived the withdrawal.
My marriage did not. Within 30 days, I was asking for a divorce - a good
thing. The drug had made murky the reality of my mock life.
It had also dulled my senses.
What I remember most about that time was not the break-up of my marriage,
but a fresh experience of what it means to be alive. It was a day in April,
three weeks after I'd quit Vivol. I was outside and there was the breath of
spring all around me. I saw colours, smelled scents, and heard sounds I'd
not been aware of in 16 years. The world was suddenly beautiful again.
