Subject: NYC's Poor and Minorities at Greater Risk for Chronic Diseases,
Premature Death
---------------------------------
Dear Colleague:
Black and Hispanic New Yorkers, as well as poor city residents regardless
of race or ethnicity, are more likely than whites to have diabetes, HIV,
and other diseases, and are at greater risk of dying prematurely, according
to a new Commonwealth Fund-supported report from the city's Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene.
Health Disparities in New York City analyzes the impact of income and
race/ethnicity on variety of health measures, from infant mortality to life
expectancy. Among the findings:
? The poorest New Yorkers report poor overall health at four times the rate
of the wealthiest.
? The rate of new HIV diagnoses is about six times as high among blacks as
among whites.
? The incidence of diabetes among Hispanic New Yorkers is more than twice
that among white New Yorkers.
"Identifying the scope and location of health disparities in our
communities is a crucial step towards addressing this problem," said
Commonwealth Fund President Karen Davis. "This report provides the basis
for health leaders, clinicians, policymakers, and the public to move
forward together to find solutions."
