Dear Linda,

In education, in pedagogy, the construct of conscientizacion described by Paulo Freire earlier, then in philosophy for children by Matthew Lipman in developing community of philosophical inquiry in the classroom, in the 80', both may be the "roots" for studying and defining citizen participation or engagement. And, if we really want to go far back, Vygotsky in 20' and 30' worked on understanding the differences between learning and development, and the engagement may be the construct that he was defining in his zone of proximal development...

In community psychology, Rappaport, Zimmerman, Israel, Wandersman & Florin, in health education Minkler & Wallerstein.

In business: Christensen, C.R., and Hertenstein, J. ...

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Bojana Beric
