Manal Guirguis-Younger (Saint Paul University), Stephen Hwang (St.
Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto), and Ryan McNeil
(University of British Columbia) are editing a book, Homelessness and
Health in Canada, to be published by the University of Ottawa Press.
The editors are aiming for a publication date in late 2010.

This edited book aims to better our understanding of the diverse and
complex health challenges faced by persons who are homeless in Canada.
We encourage contributions that explore the relationship between
homelessness and health. We are especially interested in contributions
that describe and evaluate interventions designed to improve healthcare
services delivery. Clinical, empirical, and theoretical contributions
are welcome.

This book is primarily intended for researchers, policymakers, health
and social services providers, faith communities, and students. It also
may be used as a supplementary text in upper level undergraduate` and
graduate classes on vulnerable populations in a range of disciplines,
including but not limited to medicine, public health, sociology,
psychology, and policy studies. This book will be of value to a general
audience with an interest in poverty and homelessness.

RECOMMENDED TOPICS

This book will be interdisciplinary. We welcome submissions from
authors in a range of disciplines, including but not limited to
medicine, psychology, public health, health promotion, nursing, social
work, sociology, gender studies, and disability studies. The editors
are particularly interested in submissions addressing the following
issues:

-  Impacts of homelessness on health status;
-  Health and social service needs;
-  Mental health services;
-  Cultural, spiritual, and age-specific care needs;
-  Gender-based analysis of health needs;
-  Barriers and facilitators to healthcare service delivery;
-  Strategies to improve the health outcomes;
- Innovative strategies to improve health systems and services
delivery;
-  Harm reduction and addictions services;
-  Transitional housing and health;
-  Aboriginal services;
- Ethical issues in healthcare delivery to persons experiencing
homelessness; and,
- Homelessness, health, and research methods.

SUBMISSION

Prospective authors are invited to submit a two-page abstract no later
than August 15, 2009. Abstracts submissions should be accompanied by
the primary author’s curriculum vitae. Authors will be notified of
the success of their submission by October 1, 2009.

The editors ask that prospective authors do not submit abstracts for
chapters that have already been published or are currently under review.
 If prospective authors have a previously-published article that they
feel may make a significant contribution to this volume, they are asked
to submit a one-page letter explaining why it should be included. It is
the author’s responsibility to acquire rights to reprint the article
in the volume.

Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be asked to submit a draft of
the chapter no later than December 15, 2009. Chapters should be written
in language accessible to diverse audiences, including policymakers,
researchers, healthcare professionals, service providers, and students.
It is recommended that authors do not use highly-specialized language
accessible only to colleagues in their discipline. Chapters should be
approximately 5000-6000 words in length, including references.
