I want to comment on the statement between the two asterisks. 

It's the case that EVERY ONE of the WISE women contributes to her community
to the extent that she can. All of us are limited in financial resources,
and in our emotional and physical resources due to our poverty. Yet, despite
most of us having mental and physical challenges, each contributes a
substantial amount of time to helping others. 

The thing is, this behaviour isn't at all unusual among people on very low
income. Such voluntary activities serve as the frame that supports the very
fabric of community life. Yet because voluntarism is so ubiquitous and
tangible in our communities, 'helping' becomes expected, something that
people 'just do'. Because people are assumed to help others  'as a matter of
course', no credit accrues to them, and there is no acknowledgement of their
contribution.
