Social determinants of health is the epitome of a broad inquiry into a
complex set of relationships. Has it come to this, pithy declarations of
truth, curt responses, taking either/or positions, and searching out
data that supports the opinions we already have?

Surely we can do better than this.

On the strength of the data and opinions that have been submitted in the
last few messages we should just line up the higher ed folks and shoot
them. If I'm pretty sure that I know better, and everyone else is pretty
sure they know better, where does that leave us? Jockeying for power and
position, I suspect, with little progress being made in terms of new
questions and inquiry, and regurgitating well worn positions.

If useful knowledge is identified by putting it on a scale and waiting
for the really weighty stuff to lift the fluffy stuff into the air, we'd
be bidding on it by the pound. By analogy I'd be inclined to think that
trees, a key component of forests, would be experts on the subject of
forests. By extension, if I'm an expert on trees I ought to be an expert
on forests. Nothing could be further from the truth. We ought to know
this instinctively being as interested and concerned as we are about
sdoh. Where is this overall conversation on sdoh going?
