Meeting the Health Needs of Immigrant & Refugee Women: How Far Have We Come?

Women’s Health Matters Forum & Expo
Saturday, January 15, 2005
4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Room 803A
Metro Toronto Convention Centre (South Building)

Toronto is home to almost 2.4 million women who are immigrants and refugees.
And like all women, immigrant women are at the heart of immigrant
families. When they are in good health, then the whole family thrives.

The Globe and Mail recently reported that immigrant women arrive in Canada
relatively healthy and then experience a decline in their health the longer
they live here. Why does this happen? And what can we do about it?

Four women providing health services for immigrant women will speak about
this critical issue. They will look at the needs of young women, women in
their reproductive years and women who are older. They will share powerful
stories about the experiences of the women they serve -- women who face
incredible odds and struggle to achieve good health and well being. Women
who work two jobs, who do not have OHIP, and who feel shy about speaking
English because they might make mistakes.

Come learn about the health of immigrant and refugee women and be part of a
lively discussion on strategies to meet the health needs of immigrant and
refugee women
