A large body of international and domestic research indicates that income
inequality is the best predictor of national, state/provincial, and
municipal jurisdictions' homicide and violent crime rates. The USA has the
highest income inequality and highest homicide rates among modern
industrialized nations. And in January 2006 the Economic Policy Institute
reported: "Income inequality grew across the country over the past two
decades." The story quotes an epidemiologist as saying "We didn't get here
in a day.. There's no simple solution." Actually there is: Bring back the
tax and other policies that promoted a modicum of income equity from
1940-1972 but were jettisoned during the "Reagan Revolution."
Alternatively, build more jails and death rows.
