Dear Dennis

At your urging I have written to Mr. Watson asking for him to consider some
of these matters very carefully. Perhaps all list readers can think about
doing the same. Even those outside the province or country can help to
influence thinking.

Let Jim Watson know how health relates to social policy and programs and how
you can't address health issues without paying attention to poverty etc.
Let him know what a wonderful opportunity he has to develop and interact
with other ministries to promote, prevent and address SOCIAL AND HEALTH
problems. Remind him that Roy Romanow has said (paraphrased) that you can't
really address health effectively without addressing our social programs.
....

Encourage him to become familiar with the concepts of population health and
the 'social determinants of health.' ..... Ontario indeed appears to have
an excellent resource of experts as well as interest in such matters.

Let's encourage him to learn about this. Wording in one of the initial press
releases suggests that there are some people in his office that know about
these issues.

Encouragement to all.

Best wishes

Rest assured that the Ministry of Health promotion will focus on lifestyle
choices and ignore everything else!
