Dear SDOH colleagues,
CUexpo2008
May 4-7, 2008
Community-University Partnerships: Connecting for Change
You are cordially invited to participate in the third CUexpo conference and
learning festival to be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada May 4-7,
2008. This is the third CUexpo conference following the 2003 event in Saskatoon
and the 2005 event in Winnipeg.
Your local hosts will be Victoria and Vancouver Island community organizations
and the University of Victoria. The location, the traditional territory of the
Salish peoples, offers a rich opportunity to visit community research projects
in areas of health promotion, youth and society, environmental action, culture
and tourism, community mapping, Aboriginal language retention and more.
Community-university research partnerships provide the opportunity for
community members to work directly with experienced researchers to define a
problem, conduct research, interpret findings, and apply results to bring about
positive change in their communities. This approach involves new and creative
methods of research to meet community needs and produce results that are
important and useful to community, academics and policy makers.
Community- based research is an exciting movement of learning and growing for
all involved. Through these partnerships, community members and academics build
research skills and gain increased confidence, increase democratic
participation, and influence change in the lives of all living in the region.
Draft goals for CUexpo 2008
*Celebrate existing community-university partnerships and create additional
partnerships.
*Support and legitimize research that is collaborative, community-based and
leads to positive policy and program change.
*Create a space for policy makers and university and community representatives
to take action on research, resource-sharing and research ethics.
*Provide opportunities for networking across sectors, across Canada and around
the world.
*Increase community engagement with UVic for Victoria, First Nations and
Vancouver Island communities.
*Create enjoyable and meaningful relationships, experiences and learning
opportunities for all.
The draft program and public call for presentations (workshops, papers, events)
will be available in June 2007. For more information, contact Mary ORourke,
