Risk of homelessness rises as shelter costs squeeze low-income earners
OTTAWA, Nov. 17 -- Rising shelter costs are making some of Canada’s large
urban areas too expensive for low-income people and raising the risk of
homelessness.
That’s one of the principal findings of “Quality of Life in Canadian
Communities, Incomes, Shelter and Necessities,” Theme Report I of the 2004
Quality of Life Reporting System (QOLRS) Report, released today by the
Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).
“It’s time to stop talking about affordable housing and homelessness and
start taking action,” said Councillor Brenda Hogg, Chair of the QOLRS
Technical Team. “Governments need to work together to get money flowing
quickly to create more affordable housing across the country
