Really cutting-edge!
Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention
Health promotion is a public health strategy distinct from disease
prevention and health protection strategies. Health promotion begins with
the positive concept of health, recognising that health is about much more
than ‘a lack of illness’. A key component of health promotion
is the recognition that being in control or empowered promotes and supports
individual and community health. Health promotion strategies range from
interventions to influence individuals’ decisions about lifestyles or
behaviour (for example, counselling or education campaigns about tobacco
use, healthy eating, and physical activity) to advocacy, policy and
legislative work to affect the social environment in which individual
decisions are made (for example, municipal zoning decisions affecting
access to trails or green space).
