The School of Public Health at the University of Alberta is pleased to
announce a new issue of Healthe-news.

In this issue:

Staying a step ahead - Prion research - In a world of ever-changing
health challenges for animals and humans, special attention is being
focused on diseases that may possibly cross the species barrier from
animals to infect humans. Norman Neumann, associate professor of
environmental and occupational health at the School of Public Health is
leading a team that is investigating chronic wasting disease (CWD), a
highly contagious, environmentally-transmitted prion disease found in
wild animals, particularly deer and elk.

A positive outlook can speed whiplash healing - Positive expectations
can often lead patients to better recovery in a number of health
conditions. Very little is known about expectations to recover from
injury, such as whiplash. That was, until now. Two University of Alberta
researchers and their colleague from Sweden looked at recovery from
whiplash in three separate studies, and their findings were surprising.

School garden has a global impact - Tubahumurize (pronounced
tu-bae-hu-moe-i-zei) is a Kinyarwanda word that means to console and
give hope. It is also the name of a non-governmental organization that
aims to support and empower economically marginalized women living in
Rwanda, most of whom are survivors of gender-based violence and
oppression and living with HIV/AIDS.

Alumni Weekend brings home School's first PhD grad - Suzanne Tough, '96
PhD, professor at the University of Calgary and scientific director of
the Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research, and
co-director of the Preterm Birth and Healthy Outcomes team, knows that
hard work and a supportive team can take you a long way in public
health.

New website is 'hub' for addictions information - There is no shortage
of information available about addictions and mental health in Alberta.
But, if you work in this area, where do you find such information? A new
website - Know Mo: About Addictions and Mental Health - aims to solve
this dilemma by becoming the 'knowledge mobilization hub' for addictions
and mental health information in Alberta.
