A GOOD PIECE ON COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS IN THE GLOBE AND MAIL
"Last week Mark Cherrington volunteered in mental health court, drove a
young mom to a treatment centre and rescued a 19-year-old who had just
been beaten up by a drug dealer," began a piece on the CBC site in June,
2019. Cherrington had spent 25 years as the youth advocate for Legal Aid
in Edmonton and the stone-hearted, anti-poor government of Jason Kenney
unceremoniously dumped him within weeks of taking office. It didn't stop
him. The activities mentioned above would have been typical for Mark
Cherrington when he was employed. But he continued to do them as a
volunteer after he lost his job. Anyone who follows him on Twitter knows
that he continues to do that work. Few others would.
At the same time, the UCP was busy reducing its financial aid to
non-profits that play some of the same kind of role as helpers to
vulnerable Albertans as Mark Cherrington plays.
