CALL FOR WORKSHOP  AND PRESENTATION PROPOSALS
Tenth Annual Conference of the Community Food Security Coalition
in conjunction with Food Secure Canada
"Bridging Borders Toward Food Security"
Vancouver, BC , Canada.  October 7-11, 2006

Proposal deadline: Received by April 7

The Community Food Security Coalition seeks proposals for entire 90
minute workshop sessions, individual presentations of shorter length,
or poster sessions at its annual conference in Vancouver, October 7-11.
You may propose a workshop session, poster session, or individual
presentation. For individual presentations, we will group you with
complementary presentations into a single coherent 90 minute workshop.

This year, instead of workshop tracks, we will be organizing the
conference into four themes. Each day of the conference will feature
two themes. They are:
.   Food Secure Communities
.   Food and Institutions
.   Food and Cities
.   Global Food Issues

Suggested topics under each theme

Food Secure Communities
.   Experiences of community food security projects on the ground
.   Mobilizing communities
.   Issues of race, class and power in the food system
.   Linking farmers to consumers
.   Community food assessments
.   Improving access to healthy foods, food retail

Food and Institutions
.   Farm to cafeteria programs, policies, and partnerships
.   School nutrition environment
.   Institutionalizing support for community food security
.   Capacity Building/ Skill building for stronger non-profits
.   Innovative partnerships & alliances
.   Food and the Health Care System

Food and Cities
.   Food policy/system councils and other municipal level food and
agriculture policy
.   Urban agriculture
.   Food security and urban/regional planning connections

Global Food Issues
.   Free trade and food  (WTO, NAFTA)
.   Corporate power in the food system
.   International struggles for food security/sovereignty
.   National policy issues, such as the Farm Bill
Session format
We strongly encourage interactive sessions that provide opportunities
for audience participation. We also encourage sessions that lead to a
specific outcome, that are linked to the activities of the Community
Food Security Coalition or Food Secure Canada,  or that build the food
security movement.

Applied research-related presentations are welcome. Introductory and
advanced level workshops/presentations are also welcome.

Within each workshop, it is our goal to:
.   Have both Canadian and American presenters;
.   Address issues of race, ethnic, and class diversity;
.   Incorporate relevant public policy issues, whenever applicable

Canadians looking to incorporate American presenters are encouraged to

Audience
Expect a very diverse audience in terms of occupation. They include
anti-hunger activists, policy-makers, public health staff, farmers,
emergency food providers, faith-based community representatives,
environmentalists, community based organization activists, community
residents, community gardeners, nutritionists, extension agents,
sustainable agriculture activists, food system and food security
organizational representatives, researchers/academics, students,
funders, and others engaged in building a sustainable food system. As
we expect Canadian and American attendees, please plan on explaining
any relevant political context to your presentation, limiting the use
of acronyms and jargon.

Language
Please submit proposals in English or French. Workshops and
presentations may be conducted in English or French. Simultaneous
translation will be available for a limited number of workshops,
depending upon need.

Session details
All sessions will be 90 minutes in length. Expect approximately 40-75
attendees per session.

Format of proposals
Please use the attached form, or see www.foodsecurity.org for a copy of
the form.

Audio-Visual
Due to the high cost of rentals, we are unable to guarantee LCD
projectors. If your presentation or workshop requires one, please bring
your own.

Registration Fees
Presenters are expected to cover their registration fees (approximately
$250-$350)  and travel costs. However, we will have a limited number of
partial fee waivers for presenters who are unable to do so, as
requested on a first-come first-serve basis. Presenters may attend
their workshop only at no charge.

Submission of a proposal is not a guarantee of its acceptance.  All
proposals will be reviewed by a  bi-national planning committee.
Notifications of your proposal's status will be provided by April 30.
