I am always stunned when I hear middle-class and upper-middle-class
professionals state that lack of money is not the real problem families
with children face when living on low incomes (Maggie Mamen, letter, May
15, 2006). Besides the thousands of studies that indicate that living under
conditions of material and social deprivation threatens children's
cognitive and social development by depriving them of basic necessities,
disrupting family interactions, and skewering children's sense of control
over their lives, Ms. Mamen should try talking to families living on low
income. These families and their children would tell her they wish they
had enough money to do the same things and participate in the same
activities that well-paid psychologists and their children are able to do.
And avoiding having to use food banks and buying second-hand clothes, and
not hearing the judgments of professionals about their parenting skills
would help as well.
