What makes people healthy? This is a deceptively simple question and the
answer will likely vary considerably depending
on whom you ask. Many high profile health promotion and public health
efforts suggest the importance of individual risk
factors, such as exercise, diet and tobacco use. Others may point to public
health care. While these factors are important, there is an extensive
body of research showing that social determinants have a greater influence
on patterns of health and illness than do other factors.

socio-economic conditions that influence the health of individuals and
