Subject: Re: [SDOH] economic argument for poverty solutions

I am enjoying all of the responses brought up by the mention of the
economic argument for poverty solutions. I have several thoughts...

One is that it is incredibly valuable to think of the enormous costs of
not attending to the social determinants of health, ie. the example used
in a brochure Dennis circulated recently, where the example of a
homeless person having a heart attack and in the process of the
ambulance situation and a hospital stay, $28,000 is spent on an
episode... And yet if that person had that money invested in adequate
housing, support, food, and even employment support...

So I think the comment on storytelling is excellent. And these stories
need to be told with the science of SDH and the math of socioeconomics.

And these stories and the SDH understanding needs to be told to leaders
in current postions of power.

I think we need to form a coalition with a unified voice, that goes
after developing relationships with owning class or upper middle class
leaders who do not have a clear grasp of what it means to struggle
financially. This must be done patiently. We all have a lot of feelings
about this, including passion.... We need to be able to be good
listeners for each other and especially as we look to our peers for
emotional support. Sometimes it can look like wealthy folks don't want
to help... I think that largely, if they understood, they would want to
do the right thing.

I've started in the past year, after two leadership and advocacy
trainings, to meet with our local MLAs and MPs with regard to a national
strategy for cancer control. My big passion of course is the primary
prevention piece. Right now in BC, with the Olympics on the horizon, BC
has put health on the agenda across governmental sectors. But of course
the big push is individual choice in diet and exercise. How
frustrating!!! My pop health/sdh buddies can give me a "session" on
where I feel frustrated and before I attend meetings with leaders...
Leaders need to be informed respectfully. I am hoping that cancer folks
can lead the way in getting health on the corporate and governmental
agendas... Especially with the confusion that exists around chronic
diseases (ie. the WHO's World Bank funded initiative on Chronic diseases
sitting right next to their Commission on the SDH). Everyone is
struggling with confusion, the WHO included....

Primary prevention keeps falling off the table and I am thankful for
this forum to connect with you all.

Dennis, with your $500.00 you could get more effective treatment for
your heart problems and 'by-pass' the costly and arguably ineffective
methods preferred by the current health care system.

Yes, I agree, but the rich shape public policy in our nations and some
argue that the rich benefit from poverty (low wages, ever flattening
income tax rates, etc.)

Witness that our federal government in Canada cries about how health
care being NOT sustainable but has $500 to shell out to each and
everyone. What can I do with $500 if I need a heart bypass and the
system cannot provide one!
