hi all,
two thoughts on this issue..

1) i think it would be helpful if the roots of oppression (both active and by neglect) were better exposed. exactly what are the oppressor/neglectors gaining from their actions? how are their actions of oppression so well embedded in our society? i guess i dont think think its enough to note racism, classism, genderism etc.. we know its there. what purpose is it serving for whom? i tend to think of material "benefit"- if thats a term to use here, but i suspect there are psychological "benefits" as well..

2) each "field of oppression" for lack of a better term- racism, classism etc- has a history, usually intertwined with other fields of oppression.. what are these? in specific terms- what has happened to violence, white people and black people in ontario? how did you get where you are at? what are the stories of action and reaction?

Subject: [SDOH] Racialization of Crime : Anti-Racist responses to the Guns + "Gangs" Debate

In my perspective, it is important to examine the underlying causes of
income disparities and poverty - that is how oppression in the form of
racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism etc are underlying factors which both
affect inviduals in material and psychological ways, which benefit socially
dominant groups to the deteriment of those who experience systemic and
personal oppression. Because of the often unspoken interpretation that
proverty or poor neighbourhoods = people of colour, it is important that
discussions on crime and poverty also include a broader analysis on racism,
etc as root causes.

On this note, there is a panel discussion coming up on Jan 29th examining
the racialization of crime and responses to how the issue of gun violence is
being portrayed by the media and "addressed" by those in positions of power.
See below for details on the Panel.
