Inaugural Dean - Faculty of Health
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Inaugural
Dean, Faculty of Health

Since its founding in 1959, York University has continued to grow, to
innovate and to evolve. Now Canada’s third largest university, York has a
student population of 51,000 and an alumni community of more than 190,000.
Committed to a superior student experience, the University has an
international reputation for excellence in research, teaching and practice
in innovative undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. In
addition to the new Faculty of Health, York University delivers programs
through 10 other Faculties. The University has twenty-two research centres
and institutes.

As the Inaugural Dean, Faculty of Health, you will lead the University’s
response to the growing need for innovative, interdisciplinary education
and research on health, bringing together the Schools of Kinesiology and
Health Science, Health Policy and Management, Nursing, and psychology in an
integrated and holistic community.

The Faculty of Health will do much more than link health specialties. It
will bring together a range of disciplinary perspectives on health from the
sciences, social sciences, nursing, management and administration,
humanities and informatics. Students and researchers in the Faculty of
Health will engage in a wide scope of inquiry in the study of health
ranging from experimental and epidemiological techniques to clinical case
studies, policy analyses, and a variety of phenomenological and critical
methods.

Research emerging from the Faculty will focus not only on hospitals and
clinics but also on local and global communities, urban and rural social
conditions and the interactions between the economic environment and
health, and will include a broad spectrum of both basic and applied
research. The goal is to break down barriers and provide genuine
leadership in responding to the changing definition and needs of health in
Canada and internationally.

As you lead this new community of 8000 students and 175 full-time faculty,
you will champion the concept of integrated health strategies and
interdisciplinary health thinking. With academic qualifications
appropriate for a senior academic appointment, you have demonstrated
leadership in a university or a health-related setting. You bring strong
relationship building and communication skills and understand the dynamics
of change in a complex, challenging environment, along with the ability to
raise funds for the Faculty. You have the passion and commitment needed to
work with colleagues in developing and implementing a new vision for
health.

The appointment is for five years, commencing July 1, 2006.

Applications and nominations should be submitted by February 28, 2006 to:
