Here in Northern BC we have similar problems to the ones described in
Cornerbrook. The opening of a medical program associated with the UBC
medical school at our local university, UNBC, is expected to help
alleviate the shortages by improving the interests of doctors-to-be in
serving rural communities. However, I just read an article from the
Australian rural and remote health list serv that talked about training
opportunities. From memory it said rural residencies/training improved
interest and desire but that did not necessarily translate into more
doctors, that were other factors that impacted doctors' decisions
regarding working in rural areas. It might be a useful piece and I can
dig it out.....

Subject: CBC inquiry
Dr. Raphael
My name is Patti Griffin, and I work at CBC radio in Corner Brook ,
Newfoundland.
We are working on stories having to do with the difficulty recruiting
doctors to rural areas...
As you know it's a problem throughout the country . In our area...it
has become particularly alarming.
I remember reading a report on the SDOH list serve...that spoke of
incentives for keeping doctors in rural areas....
It mentioned how a doctor's status... is related to where he
works...the factors that contribute to moving up in the medical
world.,..don't coincide...with a life in rural areas... etc
I can't seem to find it in the archives....If you can point me in the
right direction I would appreciate it...
Thanks
Patti Griffin
