Students say global health program is going wrong way

The emerging picture of the University of Washington's new department of
global health, launched with a $30 million donation from the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, has students both excited and worried.

Many are excited the program is finally taking shape as three physicians,
two from the UW and one from Yale University, are now on the short list to
chair the new department. An earlier choice turned down the job.

The new finalists are Dr. Lawrence Corey, a renowned AIDS vaccine scientist
at the UW; Dr. Stephen Gloyd, director of the UW International Health
Program; and Dr. Michael Merson, former dean of Yale University School of
Public Health.

But students are also worried the new global health department is already
showing symptoms of becoming an outgrowth of the school's massive medical
research establishment rather than something truly new and innovative...
