There's a longer version of Siahpush et al. freely available online:
http://www.vctc.org.au/publ/reports/Smoking_SES_household_expenditure.pdf

And another Australian report:
Law, Margie (2005). House of cards: Problem gambling and low income earners
in Tasmania. Hobart: Anglicare Tasmania.
http://www.anglicare-tas.org.au/pdfs/house_of_cards.pdf
via http://www.anglicare-tas.org.au/research/publications.html
This report tells the stories of low income Tasmanians who have a gambling
problem or a family member with a gambling problem. The
report calls for stronger consumer protection measures and increased
spending on initiatives to assist people with gambling problems.

And a US article:
Welte, J. W., Barnes, G. M., Wieczorek, W. F., Tidwell, M. C., & Parker, J.
C. (2004). Risk factors for pathological gambling. Addictive Behaviors,
29(2), 323-335.
Welte et al. found that lower SES and being a member of a minority
sub-population increased the risk for gambling problems.
A summary/discussion of Welte et al. is available online at The Wager:
Risk factors for gambling problems: Are you in the minority? The Wager,
9(36) (2004, September 8).

Hi Frank,
Three of our people have written a nice piece on the vicious cycle of
gambling, smoking boozing, low income, no insurance.
Siahpush M, Borland R, Scollo M. 2004. "Is household smoking status
associated with expenditure on food at restaurants, alcohol, gambling and
insurance? Results from the 1998-99 Household Expenditure Survey,
Australia." Tobacco Control. 13: 409-414
