Racial Disparity can lead to income disparity if the jobs aren't there for

I would also like to add my support to Sivan comment. Racism is a cause of
income disparity and thus a determinant of health. Thus, if we are talking
about racial disparities in health we must talk about racism and not just
income issues. Also, if we talk about income disparities, we must talk about
causes of these disparities. I feel that the language often used to talk
about social determinants of health should be expanded from "povery, income
and social exclusion" to talking about social inequality as a result of
oppression: racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, etc.
In our Canadian society (where this listserv originates from) we are taught
the myth that racism etc basically no longer occurs and that we are not
supposed to talk about racism etc, and thus the language of "povery, income
and social exclusion" doesn't necessarily lead people to think of oppression
automatically. Somehow poverty is often constructed as the problem of
individual people, rather than related to how people are poor because of
systemic and everyday racist, sexist, homophobic, etc practices meant to
exclude people who are not members of socially dominant groups (people of
colour, women, queer people, etc) from jobs and other opportunities. It is
better to be specific about the causes of health disparities so that we can
then work to eliminate those disparities.
Thanks,
Lindsay
