Subject: [ocap] Hunger March, Raise the Rates Petition...
Sent: March 7, 2006 5:16:02 PM

1.  Raise the Rates Petition

2.  Hunger March - March 15

----------------------------------------

(please forward far and wide...)

http://www.ocap.ca/rtr/diet/petition

It has now been made public that the Liberals will be passing their
budget
on March 23rd.  In the lead up to that date many actions and
demonstrations are being planned in Ontario as a final push to demand an
increase to welfare and ODSP, along with a restoration of the special
diet
program.  In adding to this, OCAP encourages you to sign the petition
below, not because we believe it will be a deathblow to the Liberals,
but
rather to consolidate the massive support that exists to ‘Raise the
Rates’
as we approach the budget’s release.

Every time someone signs the petition an e-mail will be sent to the
Premier and Social Services Minister Pupatello with the note below.  We
ask you to add your name to this petition and forward it far and wide
and
to support the public actions being planned in the weeks ahead that
carry
these demands (see information about the Hunger March below).

To sign the petition, go to http://www.ocap.ca/rtr/diet/petition

Premier McGuinty:

Your Government has not addressed the poverty and hunger of hundreds of
thousands of people in Ontario who must try to survive on welfare and
disability payments.

The grossly inadequate 3% increase in social assistance rates that you
have provided fails to address the massive 40% loss in real income for
the
poor that has taken place over the last ten years. Indeed, by breaking
your election pledge to index welfare income to the rate of inflation,
you
have created a situation where the poor will become poorer under your
Government than they were in the days of Mike Harris.

Your Minister of Community and Social Services, Sandra Pupatello, has
just
gutted the Special Diet Supplement. This allowed experienced medical
providers to diagnose food allowances that would protect the health of
those that governments (yours included) have legislated into poverty.

We, the undersigned, call upon your Government to restore the Special
Diet
Supplement and to include in the upcoming Provincial Budget a 40%
increase
in social assistance rates.
