Gary Bloch and Kathy Hardill are absolutely correct when they point out
that poverty is a more important health issue than tainted water, SARS,
obesity or smoking (Queen's Park ignoring looming health crisis, March 10,
2006). Of course this raises the question: Why is Provincial Health
Officer Sheela Basrur warning the public about the dangers of being fat
rather than being poor? Perhaps it has something to do with being an
employee of a provincial government that is doing little to reduce poverty
rates? And I guess one doesn't become Provincial Health Officer by being a
champion for the marginalized and oppressed.
