Thank you Dot!
By the way, many of our 'leaders' in the NCLF are survivors of cancer.
If you wantt o discuss any part of what you find, please email or call.

Dear D. Bonnenfant

The CSCC is a plan that could help bring national standards to horrible
situations like yours: This link has some of the work that has been done
posted on this page:
http://www.cancercontrol.org/cscc/work_reports1.html.

The CSCC is a plan that needs ongoing input and collaboration with
"stakeholders" including patient and family experiences.

The National Cancer Leadership Forum (NCLF)are the people (stakeholders)
who are working to have this national plan in place that would do things
like bring "standards of practice" and "clinical practice guidelines" to
provinces so that each Canadian has some kind of equal access to
adequate care. (www.cancerforum.ca) Our membership is open, see the list
of coalition members. Pick one that fits and get involved by asking to
participate in an NCLF leadership or advocacy training.

Even the smallest contributions of a letter to an MP or MLA have had a
great impact in gathering support for the plan so far. I did this with a
small group in Kelowna. And if you really have something to add to the
plan (CSCC),put forth your ideas and be persistant. The model for social
change put forth by the NCLF has empowered me to take more risks.

Thanks for sharing your poignant reflections.
All the best,
Shannon Lavell

I can only speak from personal experience.

My dear sweet partner had gliblastoma multiform (brain cancer). terrible
disease for my partner. terrible challenge for caregivers

the physicians we saw were capable (I think)
no holistic approach
no coordinated care
no 'education' (the oncologist told me the name of the cancer and to
'google' it for more info) very little compassion if any. (the nurse
told me over the phone "there's nothing can be done anyway".) impatience
and curt responses in the emergency wards. no hope offered - in fact any
'ray' of hope that I had been able to find was squashed. no response and
barriers when I showed them data/research from 'the' brain tumour
centres around the world and requested other treatments be at least
considered. (as if: there there little girl - just do as your told and
don't bother us with anything you don't know anyting about.)

we are 20 minutes to a regional cancer centre in Ottawa.
we were refused there.
where did we have to go? - Sherbrooke 5 hours drive away and Montreal -
2 hours away.

help and hope came from friends and family.
compassion and care - same.
any help and education or change in care came from my searching and
asking and pushing and pushing and pushing...... At the end of the road:
palliative care staff in a palliative care home were phenomenal.
