The province will continue to claw back the National Child Benefit
Supplement, but does keep the clawback at 2003 levels; increases to the
benefit in the last three years will go to social assistance recipients who
collect it, for an increase of $56 million this year and $75 million next
year.
"These improvements will mean that a single-parent family with two children
will receive $1,620 more in 2006-07 than they would have had in 2003-04,"
Finance Minister Dwight Duncan said in Thursday's budget speech.
"That's 15.7 per cent more."
Still, the decision not to honour a campaign promise to stop clawing back
the federal child tax benefit before the end of the government's four-year
mandate is liable to chafe as the Liberals head into an election in October
2007...
